Europe

The countries in Europe have a long tradition for international trade dating back to the Roman and Byzantine empires as well as the Scandinavian Vikings who, despite their reputation as vicious warriors, most of all were skilled traders. The strategic locations by the Atlantic, Baltic and Mediterranian Seas have been major contributors to many of the nations’ historic positions as great seafaring and trading nations.

Europe is characterised by stable and affluent nations interconnected and strengthened through their membership of the EU as well as the European Economic Area, which is a free trade agreement between EU, Norway, Iceland and Lichtenstein. All of the European countries involved in the ECP2010 are also part of the Enterprise Europe Network, a partner network co-financed by the EU, which provides internationalisation and innovation services to SMEs.

Today, a great amount of research and development companies combined with a significant agricultural sector, has given Europe a strong position within the fields of foods, food processing, energy and environment. The area is dominated by small and medium sized companies, which employ 70-80 percent of the workforce.
