General information
Denmark covers an area of about 43,000 square kilometres and consists of the peninsula of Jutland and around 400 islands, of which only 80 are inhabited. The largest and most densely populated island is Zealand on which the capital of Denmark, Copenhagen, is situated. Denmark has approximately 5.5 million inhabitants, and the native language for the large majority of the population is Danish.
Denmark is divided into 5 counties and 98 municipalities. The regions and municipalities are responsible for almost all services provided for the citizens. By international standards, Danish municipal autonomy is extensive.
Denmark is a member of the UN, NATO, OECD, WTO, IMF, the EU and the Nordic Council. Denmark became a member of the European Economic Community (now the European Union) in 1973.
Tourism
Denmark’s historic past as a Viking nation along with its history as Europe’s oldest - and at one time the most powerful – monarchy, has left historic monuments all over the country. Royal castles, historic churches and Viking Age monuments are today major tourist attractions together with modern art and design museums and world famous theme parks such as Tivoli and Legoland.
Great diversity and short distances are the main characteristics of the Danish countryside, and even though the country is small, great nature experiences await you.
Nowhere in Denmark is more than 50 kilometres away from the coast, and especially the west coast of Jutland is famous for its long wide sandy beaches and impressive sand dunes. The Danish landscape is mainly flat with gently rolling hills, and the highest point, Ejer Bavnehøj, is only 170.89 metres above sea level. You can find flat marsh, heather heaths, hills, beautiful archipelagos and woodland fiords alongside lush farmland. In addition to the many picturesque towns and villages found across the country, the capital Copenhagen has been nominated as one of the most liveable cities in the world.
